Small Cones: Used in the kiln shut-off device called the Kilnsitter. When the temperature inside the kiln is sufficient, the small cone deforms under the weight of the Kiln Sitter rod, triggering the kiln to shut off. Bar Cones: Specifically designed for use in the Kiln-Sitter. They yield the same result as junior cones centered in the Kiln Sitter. During firing, a cone softens and melts as it is heated. Cones on the kiln shelf bend due to gravity pulling the tip down. This bending indicates that the cone and the ware have received a specific amount of heat. The bending behavior of cones is related to temperature. Each higher cone number requires more heat to bend. For example, a cone 01 needs less heat treatment than cone 1, and cone 020 needs less than 019. The only true measurement of heatwork comes from a large or self-supporting cone placed on the shelf next to the ware.
